Types of Redirects

Different redirect types serve different purposes and have varying SEO impacts:

  • 301 Moved Permanently: SEO friendly, passes 90-99% link equity
  • 302 Found (Temporary): No link equity passed, for temporary moves
  • 307 Temporary Redirect: HTTP/1.1 version of 302, preserves method
  • 308 Permanent Redirect: HTTP/1.1 version of 301, preserves method
  • Meta Refresh: Client-side, less SEO friendly
  • JavaScript Redirect: Client-side, search engines may not follow

Best Practices

  • Use 301 redirects for permanent URL changes
  • Keep redirect chains as short as possible (max 3 hops)
  • Avoid redirect loops (infinite chains)
  • Use server-side redirects over client-side
  • Monitor redirect performance regularly
  • Update sitemap after implementing redirects

Common Issues

  • Redirect chains longer than 3 hops
  • Redirect loops (infinite redirection)
  • Mixed 301 and 302 redirects in chain
  • Using meta refresh for important pages
  • Missing or broken final destination
  • Slow redirect chains affecting page speed
